Bookmobile: Mobile Library Services

Mobile vehicles provide access to library materials and services while offering high-interest programming and engagement to enrich the lives of those who may have obstacles visiting our branches, or are not aware of our services.

Adult and Community

Adult and Community Engagement mobile vehicles visit a wide range of Baltimore County communities with a focus on serving adults, including senior retirement homes, assisted living facilities and community outreach opportunities.

Services

The Bookmobile houses a collection of borrowable materials, including:

  • New and popular titles
  • Large type books
  • Audiobooks on CD and Playaway
  • Magazines
  • DVDs

Materials Requests

You can request any title from the catalog to be sent to a vehicle for pickup at any scheduled bookmobile visit, by selecting Mobile-Adult as your branch when placing a hold request. You may also ask any staff on the Bookmobile or in a branch to request books or other materials for you to pick up on a vehicle.

Not sure what to read, watch or listen to? Request a Be Surprised Bundle by calling 410-887-7586.

Returns

Vehicles can accept returns from any branch, and materials checked out from a mobile vehicle may be returned to any branch.

Fees

While the majority of library services are free, fees do apply to lost or damaged items. Fees may be paid on the bookmobiles by using a personal check or money order—cash is not accepted. Fees may also be paid at any branch or online by logging in to Your Account.

Youth and Family Engagement mobile vehicles serve children and families throughout Baltimore County, with a focus on those with socioeconomic barriers to accessing early literacy resources, books and other materials as well as library services.

Services

Materials Requests

The Youth and Family Engagement mobile vehicles are stocked with a variety of materials. Mobile vehicle and branch staff are able to assist with requests for books and other materials as well as Teacher Collections. Request a Be Surprised Bundle by selecting the Mobile-Youth/Family option from the pickup location dropdown

Fees

Fees may be paid on the vehicles by using a personal check or money order—cash is not accepted. Fees may also be paid at any branch or online by logging in to Your Account.

Returns

Vehicles can accept returns from any branch, and materials checked out from a mobile vehicle may be returned to any branch.

Youth and Family Engagement mobile vehicles visit licensed child care providers across Baltimore County who primarily serve children with socioeconomic barriers to accessing early literacy resources. Children and caregivers from each site board the mobile vehicle to engage in early literacy activities and select age-appropriate books and materials for checkout to use in the provider’s site. This service is offered during the school year (September through May).

Child care providers may search for materials in the catalog and use their Teacher Loan Card to request any teaching resources, materials for children in their care and Teacher Collections for pickup at their child care site by selecting Mobile-Youth as the branch when placing a hold request.

After school and during the summer months, the Youth and Family Engagement mobile vehicles visit neighborhoods to serve youth of all ages and their families who have socioeconomic barriers to accessing library resources. Staff provide literacy materials and activities to support out-of-school-time learning.

You may request any materials from the catalog to be sent to a vehicle for pickup at a Youth and Family Engagement neighborhood vehicle stop by selecting Mobile-Youth as your branch when placing a hold request.
