Library Recognizes and Celebrates Juneteenth: A Commemoration of Freedom
Juneteenth is observing its 157th year and the library is celebrating the holiday! Also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, it recognizes that on June 19, 1865, a Union general arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved African Americans were to be set free. The following year, the people of Galveston held a celebration to mark the occasion, filled with food, music, ceremony and communion. That annual celebration ultimately culminated in the recognition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021.
