Children's Book Awards

 

ALA's Book and Media Awards - includes links to the Batchelder, Belpre, Caldecott, Carnegie, Coretta Scott King, Newbery, Printz, Laura Ingalls Wilder awards and many others. 

 

Américas Book Award - given in recognition of U.S. works of fiction, poetry, folklore, or selected non-fiction (from picture books to works for young adults) published in the previous year in English or Spanish that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States.

 

Black-Eyed Susan Award - honors outstanding books for K-12, chosen annually by Maryland students. Award serves to promote literacy and lifelong reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature. Winners are announced after April 25 of each year.

 

 

Caldecott Award - ALA's annual award for best picture books are listed here from 1938 to present. 

 

The Giverny Award - for children's books on biology, is an annual award established in 1998 by Dr. James H. Wandersee and Dr. Elisabeth Schussler.

 

Maryland Blue Crab Young Reader Award - the best fiction and nonfiction books published at the K-2nd grade reading level and at the 2nd-4th grade reading level, both for children reading at grade level and for reluctant older readers. [PDF]

 

Newbery Award - ALA's annual award to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

 

Orbis Pictus Award - was established in 1990 by the National Council of Teachers of English to promote and recognize excellence in nonfiction writing.

 

Pura Belpré Award - awarded to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children.

 

Schneider Family Book Award - honors an author or illustrator for the artistic expression of the disability experience for children and teens. Given annually by the American Library Association.

 

Scott O'Dell Award - honors authors of historical fiction for children or young adults.

 

Sydney Taylor Book Awards - recognizes the best in Jewish children's literature each year. Gold medals are awarded for outstanding books that authentically portray the Jewish experience. Silver seals are awarded to Honor Books in each category.
