OCLC Basics...

  • To obtain materials not available through BCPL or Marina, find the title in the OCLC WorldCat catalog and then request an OCLC Loan through any BCPL branch information desk or through our Ask a Question email.

  • You must have a valid library card from the Baltimore County Public Library to request material through OCLC.

  • Each item requested is subject to a $2 BCPL processing fee.

  • Some OCLC loans may have additional fees imposed by the lending library. At the time you make a request, you will be asked if you want to pre-authorize additional charges up to a stated amount. BCPL’s Interlibrary Loan staff will contact customers before submitting any request with a lending fee over $10.

  • Most requests are filled within two weeks, but they may take as long as four to six (4 to 6) weeks to arrive, depending on the response time and shipping mode of the lending library.

  • You will be notified when a requested item is received at your designated pickup location and is placed on the branch’s hold shelf.

  • The usual loan period is 21 days, but the length of the loan period is determined by the lending library. Some lending libraries may require a shortened loan period or other restrictions on use of their material.

  • Items cannot be renewed.

  • The Interlibrary Loan Department will notify you if BCPL is unable to fill your request. If your request is unfilled because the item is new (published within the last twelve months) or checked out, you may resubmit the request in several weeks.
