Happy 50th, Amelia Bedelia!

Amelia BedeliaAmelia Bedelia Means BusinessAmelia Bedelia UnleashedThis year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Peggy Parish’s Amelia Bedelia, the first book in Parish’s series about the literal-minded housekeeper whose misadventures have entertained young readers since 1963. As she starts her 50th year, Amelia Bedelia has some big news! She is going to star in her own line of chapter books for new readers. The first two books of Herman Parish’s (Peggy's nephew) new chapter book series about young Amelia Bedelia will soon be available. In Amelia Bedelia Means Business, Amelia wants a bike like her new classmate Suzanne’s, but it’s very expensive. Amelia decides to earn the money for the bike herself with hilarious results. Amelia Bedelia’s parents say that she can get a new puppy in Amelia Bedelia Unleashed, so she sets out to find the puppy of her dreams. These new chapter books are a great step up for new readers who are ready for something a little more challenging than the original Amelia Bedelia series.

You can join in the celebration of Amelia Bedelia Day on January 29th by reading your favorite Amelia Bedelia book, or trying one of the crafts and activities on Amelia Bedelia’s birthday website.

Happy 20th Anniversary, Junie B. Jones!

Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly BusJunie B. First Grader: Turkeys We Have Loved and EatenTwenty years ago, Random House approached 3 of their established authors to begin a new line of books for new readers who were just starting to read chapter books.  Those authors were Barbara Park, Mary Pope Osborne, and Louis Sachar. The series that the authors created were Junie B. Jones, The Magic Tree House, and Marvin Redpost, all of which are now standards for young readers and have sold millions of copies.

In the beginning, Park had reservations about writing for 6-9 year olds, but she decided to give it a shot and began work on the Junie B. Jones series. Park says, “Within the first four sentences, I discovered I had a character who hated her middle name. By the second page, I knew she was a wild child, who – big surprise – had not yet mastered the Queen’s English. And when I finally finished the book, I thought maybe I could write one or two more. I was a little low with my expectations, apparently.” Her expectations were definitely too low. There are now 29 books in the Junie B. Jones series, and more than 52 million copies in print!

To celebrate 20 years of Junie B. Jones, Random House has published a special edition of the first novel in the series, Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus. This commemorative edition has some great extras including full-color illustrations and an interview of the author conducted by none other than Junie B. Also, look for Junie B.’s next big adventure Junie B., First Grader: Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten (and Other Thankful Stuff), a Thanksgiving-themed book due out this August!

The Crazy Case of Missing ThunderGoofiness abounds with the newest detective agency to hit the scene. The Goofballs are four elementary school friends with unique goofy talents like making funny disguises and nutty inventions. Jeff, Mara, Brian and Kelly have been a team since first grade. They solve mysteries. In The Crazy Case of Missing Thunder, by Tony Abbott, the gang is hired to find a rich kid’s missing pet. With the help of Jeff’s dog, Sparky (the official Goofdog), the friends ferret out clues and don disguises, all the while dropping puns and having a good time.

This series is sure to be a hit with young readers who enjoy a mystery and a good laugh. Your 2nd to 4th grader will giggle at the word play and have a good time. It’s a fresh silly series for your young reader who is ready for chapter books. Parents will love the underlying message of friendship and self-confidence the young sleuths demonstrate. Be sure to also check out the second in the series - The Startling Story of the Stolen Statue.
